Ramon Hernandez Jr. has been practicing judo since the age of four.

His father opened North Jersey Judo in October 2006, and Ramon has grown up on the mat ever since, competing in local, regional, and junior national tournaments across the country. It wasn’t until he was nearing his 17th birthday that Ramon truly found confidence in his own Judo and began establishing himself on the local competitive scene.

In addition to judo, Ramon was a multi-sport athlete for the Pompton Lakes Cardinals. He competed in soccer and track & field for four years and wrestling for two years during high school.

Despite having no prior wrestling experience, Ramon qualified for the New Jersey High School Wrestling State Championships and finished his senior season with an impressive 39–5 record. As his father often says, “It was all Judo.” During that season, Ramon defeated five returning state qualifiers and went undefeated throughout the regular wrestling schedule.

Ramon And Family As A Kid

Set-Backs Due To Injuries

Injuries present some of the greatest challenges an athlete can face, disrupting training, competition schedules, and overall performance. Beyond the physical pain, injuries bring significant mental hurdles, forcing athletes to reassess their goals while overcoming doubts and fears of re-injury. Yet, it is often through adversity that true character is revealed. Ramon Hernandez Jr. demonstrated remarkable perseverance and resilience following a devastating setback in March 2022, when he tore his right ACL during a small competition just days before an IJF Open event. The injury sidelined him for nearly ten months and tested both his physical and mental strength.

With the unwavering support of his family, we immediately sought out one of the top knee surgeons in the New Jersey/New York area and committed fully to the recovery process. Through discipline, patience, and determination, Ramon returned to regular training by December of that same year. His injury deeply affected our entire team, but his dedication and comeback became a powerful source of inspiration for everyone around him and a reminder that setbacks do not define an athlete; the response to them does.

Ramon’s First Senior Nationals Following ACL Reconstruction

Ramon returned to competition at the Senior National, posting a strong 3–2 record and a clear improvement from his first Senior Nationals appearance two years earlier. The performance was especially meaningful as it came on a surgically repaired knee, following a full year away from competition in 2022 due to injury.

Injuries are an inevitable part of an athlete’s journey, and recovery often demands as much mental strength as physical effort. With the unwavering support of his family, Ramon received exceptional medical care and rehabilitation throughout his recovery process.

More importantly, his personal determination and commitment set him apart. Ramon approached rehabilitation with the professionalism, discipline, and focus of a seasoned athlete, fully dedicated to returning stronger and ready to compete once again. His comeback to the national stage reflected not only physical recovery, but the resilience and mindset required to pursue excellence at the highest level.
